Description Collect a variety of new or used popular magazines, such as Sports Illustrated, Time, Fitness, In Style, etc. Analyze each magazine for subtle messages or phrases that may affect the way the reader views the world or lives their life. For instance, an article about dieting may contain cultural assumptions and expectations regarding beauty or self-control. Find and circle in black permanent marker key words that you feel may cause a reader to feel or think a certain way. These magazines will be displayed in the Student Union building as a way to allow students to understand the marketing strategies that affect our lives in both positive and negative ways. Along with each magazine, include a short explanation of the project, and what readers can expect as they flip through each magazine. Consider asking questions such as: Does the pervasiveness of advertising and marketing affect our ability to think for ourselves, or simply reaffirm the thoughts we already feel? If subtle messages in magazines are capable of affecting our thoughts and our actions, is it a violation of our human rights? Why or why not? Find a way for students to submit their feedback on these questions.
