Description As Central Washington gears up to sponsor the Human Rights Awareness Tour, it is important that we know about the current systems in place for poverty alleviation. One of the newest methods believed to reduce structural poverty is micro lending.

Business, Economics, Accounting, or Mathematics students can put their education to action by exploring the concept of micro lending, analyzing it's implications, and advising our Human Rights coordinators about how fundraised money should be used.

As a team or individual, Research micro lending on global and local scales. You may consider the following questions: How does micro lending operate? Is micro lending different from charity? How is micro lending different from a traditional loan system used in the U.S.? How do people pay back the loans they receive from micro lenders? Does micro lending truly help people out of the cycle of poverty, or is it just a temporary fix?

Use your research to write a short report on the effectiveness of micro lending, and make a suggestion as to whether or not it Central Washington University should take part in such organizations. A place to start: www.kiva.org
